Lao PDR has entered negotiations with the EU on establishing a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) on FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade) to achieve the following vision by 2025:
Lao wood processing industries export significant amounts of finished
timber products to the EU, U.S., China, ASEAN, Australia, Japan, South
Korea and other markets requesting legally verified timber, thereby
promoting sustainable forest management and benefiting forest dependent communities.
The Government of Lao PDR, via the Prime Minister Office, has officially announced the approval for the implementation of Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) process and the preparation to join Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA).
On 18 June 2015 the Prime Minister Office issued a Notification Letter (No. 986/PMO) highlighting that the Ministers and Vice Ministers from relevant sectors endorsed principle to set up the Negotiation Team to prepare the negotiation process for the FLEGT VPA. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has been assigned to coordinate and work with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and other relevant sectors to ensure sustainable forest management, particularly good forest governance in the national protected areas, plantation and other types of forests.
